BituBag®: An integrated solution

The BituBag® system is an integrated solution to provide the latest and most economic bitumen packing solution for producers (e.g. refineries), logistics/traders and end users.

Two plants in Portugal and Singapore have been in continuous operation for two years and thousands of tons of bitumen in BituBags have been supplied to customers world-wide.

Three components

The BituBag® system includes three components:

  1. © BLSThe BituBag®, a flexible container
The BituBag® is designed in a way that the weight and flow characteristics of the bitumen stabilizes the bag itself. It consists of a stable outer bag and an flexible inner liner, which is later on melted together with the bitumen. The empty bag weighs  only little more than 2kg. The empty, folded BituBags can be transported to any location easily and economically in standard containers - many thousands at once.
Once filled, the bags can be stored at any place without heating and even for a longer period, e.g. to bridge periods of low seasonal demand.
The filled BituBags can be transported by any means of conventional transportation, such as 20ft containers (approximately 18 mt), trucks (approximately 18 mt based on European truck rating) or rail.
During the entire transport cycle the patented BituBag® guarantees high safety  and stability as well as easy handling with forklifts. With a filling volume of approximately 1,000kg the BituBag® is practicable for small as well as large quantities.

  2. Cooling and Packing unit (CPU)
This filling unit cools the bitumen exactly to a temperature higher than the softening point of the bitumen but a little lower than the melting point of the plastic material of the container.
The bags are filled automatically at a high rate (up to 11 mt per hour and unit) to a volume of approximately 1,000 kg (depending on ambient temperature and product). The  patented cooling system guarantees a constant filling temperature at which the product is still viscous enough and pumpable but low enough to prevent melting of the container. At this condition also no bad smelling off-gases occur.
The CPUs are usually provided on the basis of a franchise agreement.

  3. BituMelt®: BituBag® melting unit
The BituMelt® units have been developed by BBLS to liquify bitumen supplied in BituBags.
The unit is designed for continuous melting and heating of large volumes of bitumen (approximately 2 mt per hour) from ambient temperature to 160°C.
The unit is available in different configurations and with several options. The compact unit can easily be transported and erected in no time. Heating is accomplished by low-maintenance Diesel burners.
Usually only one person per shift is required to operate the unit. As the bitumen is melted in batches of at least ten bags at a time, loading is accomplished in less than one hour.

Advantages

  • reduction of logistics costs up to 40%
  • feasible and economical for any quantities (from several tons up to hundred thousands of tons)
  • "soft" bitumen grades (road paving bitumen) packed in flexible, easy-to-handle, plastic container
  • applicable for all climatic conditions
  • environmentally friendly (in comparison to metal drums): inner liner is melted together with the bitumen, the outer plastic bag (<2kg) is recyclable
  • economical supply of folded empty BituBags world-wide
  • high safety and stability during transport
  • long-term outdoor storage
  • can be transported by any means of conventional transportation (ships, containers, trucks, railways etc.)
  • dimensions concur with international transportation standards
